Building Our Reading Community

What an incredible group of readers we have in room 12! The beginning of the year is a wonderful time for us to establish our reading community inside our classroom. As children get to know our classroom library, I am able to spend time reading individually with students and help each child select books they are both excited to read and capable of reading indpendently.

Research shows that one of the best ways to improve reading skills is to spend volumes of time reading good-fit books. Good fit or just right books are self-selected, highly interesting, books that can be read with 99% accuracy and fully understood.

Your child may ask to make a special 2nd-grade reading nook at home. In October we begin our 2nd grade Reading Contract as part of our homework and having a designated space at home to curl up and read is helpful.

And who doesn't love reading a great book with a buddy? We have just introduced reading partners as another part of our Reader's Workshop.
