Today week we welcomed the Caterpillar Lab from Marlborough, NH. This is one of my very favorite learning experiences of our year in 2nd grade. Students were able to observe amazing caterpillars through a powerful microscope, showing us how caterpillars breathe through spiracles, use their powerful mandibles to chow down on leaves, grip sticks with their prolegs, and so much more.
We also observed the variety of ways caterpillars have adapted to protect themselves. Some mimic sticks while others change colors to match their host plant. Brightly colored caterpillars sprout horns and spikes to warn predators to stay away.
See for yourselves the magic of the Caterpillar Lab. I hope you'll enjoy these photographs with your 2nd grade lepidopterist so you can learn how much they already know about these fantastic creatures.
